How our brains see men as people and women as body parts: Both genders process images of men, women differently

ScienceDaily (July 25, 2012) ? When casting our eyes upon an object, our brains either perceive it in its entirety or as a collection of its parts. Consider, for instance, photo mosaics consisting of hundreds of tiny pictures that when arranged a certain way form a larger overall image: In fact, it takes two separate mental functions to see the mosaic from both perspectives.

A new study suggests that these two distinct cognitive processes also are in play with our basic physical perceptions of men and women -- and, importantly, provides clues as to why women are often the targets of sexual objectification.

The research, published in the European Journal of Social Psychology, found in a series of experiments that participants processed images of men and women in very different ways. When presented with images of men, perceivers tended to rely more on "global" cognitive processing, the mental method in which a person is perceived as a whole. Meanwhile, images of women were more often the subject of "local" cognitive processing, or the objectifying perception of something as an assemblage of its various parts.

The study is the first to link such cognitive processes to objectification theory, said Sarah Gervais, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the study's lead author.

"Local processing underlies the way we think about objects: houses, cars and so on. But global processing should prevent us from that when it comes to people," Gervais said. "We don't break people down to their parts -- except when it comes to women, which is really striking. Women were perceived in the same ways that objects are viewed."

In the study, participants were randomly presented with dozens of images of fully clothed, average-looking men and women. Each person was shown from head to knee, standing, with eyes focused on the camera.

After a brief pause, participants then saw two new images on their screen: One was unmodified and contained the original image, while the other was a slightly modified version of the original image that comprised a sexual body part. Participants then quickly indicated which of the two images they had previously seen.

The results were consistent: Women's sexual body parts were more easily recognized when presented in isolation than when they were presented in the context of their entire bodies. But men's sexual body parts were recognized better when presented in the context of their entire bodies than they were in isolation.

"We always hear that women are reduced to their sexual body parts; you hear about examples in the media all the time. This research takes it a step further and finds that this perception spills over to everyday women, too," Gervais said. "The subjects in the study's images were everyday, ordinary men and women ? the fact that people are looking at ordinary men and women and remembering women's body parts better than their entire bodies was very interesting."

Also notable is that the gender of participants doing the observing had no effect on the outcome. The participant pool was evenly divided between men and women, who processed each gender's bodies similarly: Regardless of their gender, perceivers saw men more "globally" and women more "locally."

"We can't just pin this on the men. Women are perceiving women this way, too," Gervais said. "It could be related to different motives. Men might be doing it because they're interested in potential mates, while women may do it as more of a comparison with themselves. But what we do know is that they're both doing it."

Would there be an antidote to a perceiver's basic cognitive processes that lead women to be reduced and objectified? Researchers said some of the study's results suggested so. When the experiment was adjusted to create a condition where it was easier for participants to employ "global" processing, the sexual body part recognition bias appeared to be alleviated. Women were more easily recognizable in the context of their whole bodies instead of their various sexual body parts.

Because the research presents the first direct evidence of the basic "global" vs. "local" framework, the authors said it could provide a theoretical path forward for more specific objectification work.

"Our findings suggest people fundamentally process women and men differently, but we are also showing that a very simple manipulation counteracts this effect, and perceivers can be prompted to see women globally, just as they do men," Gervais said. "Based on these findings, there are several new avenues to explore."

(AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden told a national firefighters' union Wednesday that Republicans don't understand them and that government should be helping cities and states maintain fire services ? not threatening to cut funding.

Firefighters face a "perfect storm," he told more than 3,000 firefighters at the annual meeting of the International Association of Fire Fighters. He cited the effects of the recession, budgetary policies in Congress and efforts to dismantle the collective-bargaining rights of firefighters and other public employees around the country.

"We should be cutting your taxes and helping cities and states maintain their fire service," Biden said.

He said Republicans look at firefighters and see an easy place to cut budgets.

"I don't think he understands what you're about," Biden said of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. He added: "This is not your father's Republican Party. They act like you're the community's problem."

Biden, however, avoided the contract dispute in Philadelphia between firefighters and Democratic Mayor Michael Nutter, an outspoken supporter of re-electing President Barack Obama. Firefighters plan a City Hall protest on Thursday.

After the speech, Romney's campaign issued a statement from a retired Philadelphia firefighter who said Obama is out of touch with the struggles of middle-class people.

"Joe Biden can come to Philadelphia, and he can try and tell the hard-working men and women of this city that he understands what we've been going through," said Fred Donnelly, a retired battalion chief. "But no matter what he says, he can't cover up the words of the president."

Donnelly cited Obama's recent comments about the private sector "doing fine" and the success of small-business owners, which Republicans have been using against the president.

"We know that he is simply out of touch with the struggles that middle-class Americans are going through, and that he doesn't understand what drives the American economy," Donnelly said of Obama.

Being A Realtor? IS EASY! ? Anyone Can Be A Real Estate Agent ...

We?ve been in business since 1997. Every week or two, we hear a story from a client or prospective client that reminds us that the public at large has no idea what it takes to be a Realtor?. The stories we hear are always funny, and ALWAYS make us laugh. Obviously these stories are funny to us, because the public is uninformed and doesn?t know what?s going on. We realize though, that it?s not funny to you, the Realtor?.

To those ends, this week, we figured we?d make a video to expose these stereotypes, make you laugh, and make you enjoy your day, just a little more. Our friends, please enjoy!

Trojan Kids Camp Adds English, Math and Science Fun | USC ...

By Diane Ver Steeg Anderson Monday, July 23, 2012

Local children have a ball at Trojan Kids Camp.Photo by Nathan CarterLocal children have a ball at Trojan Kids Camp.

Learning everything from math, science and English to martial arts, swimming and tennis, 231 campers find daily fun and education at Trojan Kids Camp, which runs from July 2-27 on the USC campus.

Promoting a healthy and active lifestyle, Trojan Kids Camp (formerly federally funded and known as the National Youth Sports Program) hosts economically disadvantaged students, ages 9 to 11, who attend schools near University Park Campus. Partially supported by the USC Neighborhood Outreach Program and Recreational Sports, the camp costs $200 per camper with vouchers available.

?This year, we have added an education component,? said Arvin Varma, project administrator for Youth Programs and associate director for Recreational Sports. ?The kids are excited about the classes. In math, they might have an assignment like determining the percentage of free throws a person made in basketball; in English, the kids might get a topic like sports and have to talk in front of the group about it.?

Throughout the day, groups of 15 to 18 campers who are divided by age, rotate through five different sports and classes with two snack breaks and a lunch break at Tommy?s Place. Additional sports include football, soccer, basketball, kickball, volleyball, dance and ?fit skillastics,? a new, competitive event that combines board games with fitness exercises.

?One of the counselors saw something similar at a fitness conference, and it sounded interesting. So we decided to modify it and try it here,? said Varma, who likes to add new elements to the camp each year. ?The kids seem to enjoy it.?

Camp math specialist Rulywndra Walker, who teaches at Intensive Learning Center in Bellflower, joined the staff of certified teachers to help kids ?have fun with math.?

?We do some team building time,? she said. ?I try to switch it so they are moving from one activity to another to keep them alert and on their toes. The kids like it. When they are happy, I am happy.?

Counselors at the camp, which is now in its 47th year, are often former campers.? Football specialist Fabrizzio Perez, 21, attended camp with his brother Paul, who is also a counselor, from ages 10 to 14.

?When I was a kid, I used to have so much fun at this camp, so I just want the kids to have the same experience I had,? said Perez. ?Seeing the kids so excited is really cool. All the kids know me, and every time they see me they ask me, ?When are we going to come have football again???

In addition, campers go on weekly field trips, which include attending a Sparks basketball game, visiting the California Science Center and the Natural History Museum, and viewing a professional tennis tournament at UCLA.

Fresh off a field trip to the California Science Center, a group of 10-year-old campers each spoke for two minutes in front of their English class about what they learned. All hands went up when the instructor asked for volunteers. Gavin discussed ecosystems. Melina talked about bullfrog eggs.

Camper Kelly Castillo, 10, who is attending for a second year, likes that ?we get to do a bunch of activities.?

?My favorite is martial arts because, I remember it from last year, and the teacher really taught us a lot,? she said. ?We have a bunch of fun. They have taught us a lot like volleyball, basketball and tennis. I really like this camp because they teach us very well. They have swimming, and we have our teachers teach us how to dive in and hold our breath and to not be scared.?

For Varma, the best part of the camp is ?watching the kids having fun.? He added, ?When we first told people about the education part, the parents were thrilled, but the kids booed. Then I had a dad tell me his kid came home and said the best part was visiting the science museum. It is a great feeling. What we want for the kids is to learn and achieve.?

UCLA Develops Transparent, Electricity-Generating, Solar Cell Windows

produces energy by absorbing mainly infrared light instead of traditional visible light

Unclear how much energy you get in exchange for adsorbing 30% of the visible light and probably all the IR. However, if its a lot of light, it might be worthwhile to dip old fashioned incandescent bulbs into this goo. Rather optimistically, if it can generate more than 40% of the nameplate wattage by adsorbing all the IR and 30% of the visible, then you'd get ahead by recycling that power back into the grid. Not a perpetual motion machine, because 70% of the visible is still leaking out the lampshade, but it would be like the world's weirdest phosphor basically eating IR photons and emitting visible photons.

This does bring up the interesting point for unshaded windows, if it eats 30% of visible light, that merely means you need 30% more ultra-low-R value window area, or 30% more lightbulbs inside to brighten the room back up. So its not going to work well for windows in rooms where the drapes are always open and people are always inside. Great idea for my garage or bedroom (why do those have windows, anyway?) terrible idea for my office / kitchen / living room. Solar panel covered shutters seem like a good idea for the garage and bedroom... if the panels are rockin don't come a knockin or whatever.

Spain unloads $3.7 bln in medium-term debt, demand strong but interest rate higher

MADRID - Spain paid substantially higher interest rates to auction off (EURO)3 billion ($3.67 billion) in medium-term debt on Thursday amid market worries about the government's ability to right its finances.

The Treasury sold (EURO)2.96 billion ($3.62 billion) in bonds maturing in 2014, 2017 and 2019. Its target range was (EURO)2 billion to (EURO)3 billion. Demand was roughly two times the amount on offer for each issue.

But the interest rate on the five-year debt rose sharply to 6.46 percent, from 5.54 percent at the last such auction on July 5. The Treasury provided no comparable rates for the other maturities.

In the secondary bond market, where issued debt is traded openly, the yield on benchmark Spanish 10-year bonds ? a measure of investor worries about the solidity of a country's debt ? was at 6.98 percent Thursday, up 0.06 percentage points on the day.

Eurozone finance ministers are expected to give final approval on Friday for a bailout package of up to (EURO)100 billion for Spain's troubled banks. The banks' bailout was first announced in June, but it has failed to ease worries about Spain's public finances.

The auction came as Parliament debated a package of sales tax hikes and civil servant pay cuts that have triggered daily protests. A nationwide wave of rallies was planned for Thursday evening.

Treasury Minister Cristobal Montoro pulled no punches as he launched the debate. A day after saying "there is no money" to pay civil servant wages because recession and a jobless rate of nearly 25 percent are sapping tax revenue, he said Thursday that Spain simply cannot go deeper into debt.

"It is time to call a spade a spade," he told lawmakers from the podium. "Financing public services with more deficit and more debt will doom us."

The austerity package proposed by the center-right government is designed to save (EURO)65 billion through 2015. It is expected to win passage but without support from any opposition parties.

Romney demands Obama cease Bain attacks

Obama said an interview that he has run mostly positive campaign ads but said they have not been given much attention in the media.

Mitt?Romney?demanded Monday that President Barack Obama back away from his persistent?attacks?on?Romney's?record at Bain Capital, advising that it would be better "if you spent some time speaking about your record."

"What does it say about a president whose record is so poor that all he can do in this campaign is?attack?me,"Romney?said in a nationally broadcast interview.

Obama said an interview that he has run mostly positive campaign ads but said they have not been given much attention in the media.

In his interview on Fox News Channel's "Fox & Friends,"?Romney?was asked whether Obama should apologize for a series of statements and campaign commercials suggesting that?Romney?has not been truthful in his accounts of his record as head of Bain Capital, a private equity firm.

Romney?responded, "I think when people have accused you of a crime, you have every reason to go after them pretty hard." He defended his business record but did not demand an apology from Obama.?Romneyalso declined to make a fuller disclosure of tax returns than he has already committed himself to releasing.

The latest exchange of barbs came as Obama prepared for a town meeting Monday in Ohio, a critical state for both candidates this year, and?Romney?was poised to join Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal on a fundraising trip.

Obama's campaign has been arguing that?Romney's?record at Bain Capital indicates that jobs were shipped overseas under his watch. That pitch has been given a lot of attention at a time when the nation's unemployment rate remains above 8 percent and millions are out of work.

Asked about this,?Romney?said he was "very proud of the record I had in my business career." He added: "I'd say to the president, wouldn't it be interesting Mr. President, wouldn't it be interesting if you spent some time speaking about your record."

"A campaign spent on false charges and dishonesty doesn't have long legs,"?Romney?said.

"When millions upon millions of dollars are given by the Obama administration to the businesses of campaign contributors, that's a real problem, particularly at time when the middle class is really suffering in this country," the former Massachusetts governor said. "This is a tough time in America. But if you're a contributor to Barack Obama your business may stand to get billions or hundreds of millions of dollars in cash from the government. I think it's wrong. I think it stinks to high heaven."

Obama, in an interview broadcast on "CBS This Morning" Monday, was asked about the large number of negative ads that have been run against?Romney?by his campaign in recent weeks.

"If you look at the ads that we do," he replied, "first of all, we've done a whole slew of positive ads that talk exactly about how we need to change our education system, how we need to change our tax code, how we need to rebuild America, how we need to promote American energy So those just don't get attention in the news."

"I've got a very different approach," Obama said. "And the more detailed we get into what he's saying and what I'm saying, I think that serves the democratic process well."

Romney?was asked about statements by Obama supporters, including Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, that he simply "stop whining" about the Obama?attacks. He responded, "The best offense is to look at the president's record. ... He just hasn't been able to do the job he was going to try and do."

"The president has only one thing going and that is constant?attacks?on me,"?Romney?said. "They're dishonest, they're misdirected and I think the American people recognize that kind of politics is something of the past. It may work in Chicago, but it's not going to work across America."

Romney?refused calls by Democrats ? and some Republicans ? to release several years of tax returns. He said the Obama campaign was only looking "for more things for their opposition research to try to make a mountain out of and to distort and to be dishonest about."

Romney?has released his 2010 returns and has pledged he will also release a complete return for 2011, but no more.

Republican Gov. Robert Bentley of Alabama suggested at a governor's conference this weekend that?Romneydo a fuller release of tax reforms.

Romney's?campaign said Sunday that Obama is willing to say anything to win a second term and should say he's sorry for?attacking?the Republican's successful career at Bain Capital.

"No, we will not apologize," the president responded, adding that if?Romney?wants credit for his business leadership, he also needs to take responsibility. The Obama campaign says that with?Romney?at the helm, Bain Capital sent thousands of well-paying American jobs to China.

Questions about?Romney's?tenure at Bain Capital, the fortune he earned there, foreign bank accounts and his refusal to release more of his tax returns have dogged the former Massachusetts governor.?Romney?insists he left the firm in February 1999 to take over the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, but documents indicate he was still in charge as late as 2001.

Romney's?advisers, trying to explain the discrepancies between?Romney's?account and federal documents, offered fresh explanations to shift the campaign back to more comfortable ground.

"He actually retired retroactively at that point,"?Romney?adviser Ed Gillespie said Sunday. "He ended up not going back to the firm after his time in Salt Lake City. So he was actually retired from Bain."

A second adviser, Kevin Madden, said?Romney?had no choice but to have his name listed on Security and Exchange Commission documents as he sought to transfer the company's leadership to partners.

"The reason that there is a document that had ... his signature is because, during that transition from 1999 to 2002 ... there was a duty to sign those documents," Madden said.

The exact role?Romney?played at the firm between 1999 and 2001 is important not only because critics have raised questions about his truthfulness, but also because Bain was sending U.S. jobs overseas during the period.

Documents on file with the SEC place?Romney?in charge of Bain from 1999 to 2001, a period in which the company outsourced jobs and ran companies that fell into bankruptcy.?Romney?has tried to distance himself from this period in Bain's history, saying on financial disclosure forms he had no active role in the company as of February 1999.

But at least three times since then, Bain listed?Romney?as the company's "controlling person," as well as its "sole shareholder, sole director, chief executive officer and president." One of those documents ? as late as February 2001 ? lists?Romney's?"principal occupation" as Bain's managing director.

Romney?launched a rare, five-network interview blitz on Friday and insisted he was not involved with Bain during the time it sent jobs overseas and had no day-to-day responsibility for the firm.

"I had no role whatsoever in the management of Bain Capital after February of 1999," he said. "I was an owner, and being a shareholder doesn't mean you're running the business."

That wasn't enough for Obama.

"Mr.?Romney?claims he's Mr. Fix-It for the economy because of his business experience, so I think voters entirely legitimately want to know what is exactly his business experience," Obama told WAVY-TV in Portsmouth, Va., in an interview taped Saturday and posted on the station's website Sunday

"Mr.?Romney?is now claiming he wasn't there at the time except his filings with the SEC listing says he was the CEO, chairman and president of the company."

Gillespie appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press" and CNN's "State of the Union. Madden spoke on CBS' "Face the Nation."

AG Holder says Texas ID law would harm minorities

(AP) ? Attorney General Eric Holder said Tuesday he opposes a new photo ID requirement in Texas elections because it would be harmful to minority voters.

In remarks to the NAACP in Houston, the attorney general said the Justice Department "will not allow political pretexts to disenfranchise American citizens of their most precious right."

Under the law passed in Texas, Holder said that "many of those without IDs would have to travel great distances to get them ? and some would struggle to pay for the documents they might need to obtain them."

"We call those poll taxes," Holder added spontaneously, drawing applause as he moved away from the original text of his speech with a reference to a fee used in some Southern states after slavery's abolition to disenfranchise black people.

The 24th amendment to the constitution made that type of tax illegal.

Holder spoke a day after a trial started in federal court in Washington over the 2011 law passed by Texas' GOP-dominated Legislature that requires voters to show photo identification when they get to the polls.

Under Texas' law, Holder noted, a concealed handgun license would serve as acceptable ID to vote, but a student ID would not. He went on to say that while only 8 percent of white people do not have government-issued photo IDs, about 25 percent of black people lack such identification.

"I don't know what will happen as this case moves forward, but I can assure you that the Justice Department's efforts to uphold and enforce voting rights will remain aggressive," the attorney general said.

Holder said the arc of American history has always moved toward expanding the electorate and that "we will simply not allow this era to be the beginning of the reversal of that historic progress."

"I will not allow that to happen," he added.

The attorney general spoke at the 103rd convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, which is launching a battle against new state voter ID laws. NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous has likened the fight against conservative-backed voter ID laws passed in several states to "Selma and Montgomery times," referring to historic Alabama civil rights confrontations of the mid-1960s.

Holder, the first black man named U.S. Attorney General, was received with resounding applause, a standing ovation and chants of "Holder, Holder, Holder" at the convention.

Those chants quickly changed to "stand your ground, stand your ground," a reference to a Florida law that neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman is using to defend fatally shooting Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager he encountered while patrolling his community in February. Police did not initially arrest or charge Zimmerman, saying the "stand your ground" law allowed self-defense. He was later charged with second-degree murder.

Holder said the Justice Department under his leadership has taken unprecedented steps to study and prevent violence against youth and address the high homicide rate among young black men.

Finally, the attorney general noted with pride that the U.S. Supreme Court in two recent rulings regarding President Barack Obama's health care law and immigration laws passed in Arizona, largely supported the federal government and the Department of Justice. However, he said, he remained concerned that Arizona law enforcement, under the portion of the law upheld by the court, would be able to check the immigration status of any person suspected of being in the United States illegally.

"No American should ever live under a cloud of suspicion just because of what they look like," Holder said.

HBT: Red Sox's Pedroia likely headed to DL

Dustin Pedroia managed to avoid the disabled list after being diagnosed with a torn adductor muscle in his right thumb in late May, but he?ll have no such luck this time around.

Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald reports that Pedroia is indeed DL-bound. The 28-year-old second baseman sat out yesterday?s game after jamming his right thumb while trying to make a diving catch during on Tuesday. The injury is in a different area than the torn muscle.

The Red Sox have yet to make an official announcement, but Rob Bradford of WEEI.com was told by a major league source that surgery will not be required and Pedroia is expected to return when he?s first eligible.

Pedroia is hitting .266/.326/.400 with six home runs, 33 RBI, six stolen bases and a .726 OPS in 74 games played. Nick Punto figures to get most of the playing time at second base during his absence.

-LAST GAME: Samuel Gonzalez struck the first home run of the season for the Spikes over the left-field wall in the sixth inning to tie the game, but the Batavia Muckdogs scored four runs in the eighth to deal the Spikes a 6-2 defeat last night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Gonzalez's blast off of Batavia starter Ben O'Shea was the second round-tripper of his Spikes career, and snapped a 15-game homerless streak for State College to start the season. Ryan Hornback also contributed multiple hits for the Spikes.

-SAMPSON STARTS FOR FIRST TIME TONIGHT: Right-hander Adrian Sampson, the Pirates' fifth-round draft choice in 2012 out of Bellevue (WA) Community College, makes his first start as a professional for the Spikes tonight. Sampson made his pro debut on Saturday at Mahoning Valley, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out four over two innings of relief. Sampson went 11-0 this year at Bellevue, and posted a 1.36 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 79 1/3 innings.

-BIRCHER GETS BALL FOR VALLEYCATS: Left-hander Joe Bircher is slated to start for Tri-City tonight. Bircher, the 10th-round choice of the Astros in the 2012 MLB Draft, has made two professional starts so far, with both of them coming against the Connecticut Tigers. The southpaw has not gone longer than four innings in either start. An Omaha, NE native, Bircher posted a 3.58 career ERA at Bradley, the fifth-best in the metal-bat era (since 1974) at the school.

-SPIKES MOUND STAFFERS START STRONG: Jason Creasy, Clay Holmes, Luis Heredia, Jake Burnette and Joely Rodriguez each have at least one start of five innings or more with two earned runs or less this year. Holmes (1.98) and Heredia (0.64) hold two of the top three earned run averages in the entire Pirates system this year, with Rodriguez eighth at 3.21.

-SPIKE MARKS: Barrett Barnes is tied for the NYPL lead in times hit by pitch with 5, and is tied for 4th in steals with 5...State College as a team is now 22-for-27 in steal attempts this year...Jodaneli Carvajal has reached base in all 12 games he has played in 2012...Jordan Cooper is one of just five NYPL relievers with at least 6 IP not to have walked a batter this year

Need people for Burning Bright

Hi, I'm back at trying this again for another rp. This time the rp is based on a story of mine that is from a dream I had at the beginning of the year. The story can be found on fictionpress under the same username as on here, and the story is called Hidden Within.

roleplay/burning-bright/#ooc

There is the link to the rp where I hope everything is explained enough. If there are any questions, etc please contact me.

So here is the premise as short as I can make it: Sixty-six years ago an entire population was wiped out because they took in someone. Fifty years after that event a woman goes back to the island where everything happened and comes back with the video. The video details what happened on the island and what their government did. Now sixteen years after the tape, the government is sending in a group of different type of soldiers, ones that have abilities to the island to find out what really happened. Only the group doesn't know another one is being sent in behind of them to wipe them out as they are the best evidence against the government.

However, not every one of the normal people are quite so normal. There's a good chance some of them also have abilities. How are they going to feel about taking out people just like themselves? Is there a chance for the two groups to get together and turn against the government and end all of the tyrannies that have been going on?

Please check it out. I loved the dream and the story is coming along nicely too at only four chapters right now, but still... Let me know what you think and I hope to see you soon in the rp. Thanks.
