Maher blasted on Twitter for ripping Tebow

Tim Tebow vs. Bill Maher? Actually it?s more like Tebow fans, and right wing advocates, vs. Maher in a Christmas Twitter controversy. It seems that the noted atheist and host of HBO?s Real Time with Bill Maher was so delighted with Buffalo?s win over Denver on Saturday that he had to rub it a bit. And by ?a bit,? I mean a lot.

Some of it is not fit for a God-fearing, family blog such as this (laughter). Still, it?s pretty raw. You?ve been warned.

?Wow, Jesus just [screwed] #TimTebow bad! And on Xmas Eve! Somewhere in hell Satan is tebowing, saying to Hitler ?Hey, Buffalo?s killing them.?

Here?s the original tweet, if you?re so inclined.

It didn?t take long to generate some backlash. Eric Bowling of Fox News:

Bill Maher is disgusting vile trash. I can?t even repeat what he just tweeted about Tebow..on Christmas Eve. #straighttohellBill

New York Daily News:

?I like Bill Maher, but picking on Tim Tebow?s faith (rather than his football skills) is like snatching Taylor Swift?s mic at the MTV VMAs,? another user tweeted, referring to when Kanye West interrupted the pop star?s acceptance speech in 2009.

Maher?s comments come two weeks after ?Saturday Night Live? was slammed for mocking Tebow in a skit.

Which poses the question, What Would Jesus Tweet? If Jesus were on Twitter, how would he react to Maher?s comments? And would He use hashtags? Hmm, does Wired Magazine have a religion section?

Tebow himself has remained silent.

Maher was ousted from a previous talk show on ABC, Politically Incorrect, in part because of controversial comments he made following the 9-11 attacks. Maher said, and I?m paraphrasing, that the attackers were a lot of things, but they weren?t cowards. Does his tweet rise to that level of controversy? And does HBO care? The show is on break right now.

Pope condemns Nigeria attacks, prays for them to stop (Reuters)

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) ? Pope Benedict on Monday condemned the Christmas Day bomb attacks by Islamist militants in Nigeria as an "absurd gesture" and prayed that "the hands of the violent be stopped."

The pope, speaking from his window overlooking St Peter's Square in Rome, said such violence brought only pain, destruction and death.

Militants of the Boko Haram sect said they had set off the bombs, raising fears that they are trying to ignite sectarian civil war. Three of the five bombs hit churches and one killed at least 27 people at a Catholic church.

"Holy Christmas inspires us in a particularly strong way to pray to God so that the hands of the violent are stopped, (hands) that sow death in the world ..." the pope said.

He said news of the bombings in Nigeria had brought him "profound sadness" and he wanted to assure Nigeria's Christian community, hit by "this absurd gesture," that he was close to them.

"At this moment, I want to repeat once more forcefully: violence is a path that leads only to pain, destruction and death. Respect, reconciliation and love are the only ways to achieve peace," he said.

He appealed to all sectors of Nigerian society to work together to rediscover security and tranquility.

The pope did not say that the attacks had been carried out by the Boko Haram, which aims to impose sharia, Islamic law, across Africa's most populous country.

But he has in the past firmly condemned the concept of violence in God's name.

Conflict between Christians and Muslims in the developing world, mostly in Asia and Africa, is one of the Vatican's greatest worries.

Clashes have also taken place in Egypt between Muslims and minority Coptic Christians, who have their own pope but have mostly good relations with Rome.

Last month the pope chose a visit to the African country of Benin to issue a document on the future of the Catholic Church on the continent because the Vatican considers Benin a model for good relations between Christians and Muslims.

In Nigeria, on the other hand, there is a growing fear that Boko Haram is trying to ignite a sectarian civil war in a country split evenly between Christians and Muslims who for the most part coexist in peace.

For four teams, it's win and get in

San Diego Chargers v Detroit LionsGetty Images

Well, that was some Christmas Eve of football.

The Lions are headed to the playoffs. Tebowmania imploded. The Giants beat the Jets, which made Rex Ryan very unhappy and set up a Giants-Cowboys rematch?next Sunday night for the NFC East title.

So after all the fun, where do the playoff races stand? Let?s take a look.

Four spots remain.

The last wild card spot in both conferences remain up for grabs. So do the NFC East and AFC West division titles. One more spot could be decided Sunday night.

This Sunday night still matters.

With a late field goal, the 49ers narrowly?won in Seattle 19-17?to keep their hopes alive for the No. 1 seed in the NFC. That means Green Bay still has to go all out to beat Chicago on Christmas in order to clinch the top spot in the NFC.

San Francisco can clinch a playoff bye if they beat the Rams next week. (They can also get the bye if New Orleans loses one of their remaining two games. The Saints host the Falcons Monday night.)

A Packers win Sunday night would also clinch the final NFC wild card spot for the Falcons.

Only one NFC East team will make it in.

The Eagles are out. The winner of Cowboys-Giants gets a division title and a home playoff game. The loser is out of the playoffs. Simple.

Patriots clinch bye, have inside track for No. 1 seed.

New England?s 17-point comeback win over Miami puts them in good shape to have homefield advantage. The Patriots clinched a bye on Saturday, and they will get the No. 1 seed in the AFC with a home win over Buffalo next week.

The Ravens and Steelers still have a shot at the No. 1 seed. The winner of the AFC North will earn a bye. Speaking of which . . .

Ravens and the Bengals play the biggest AFC game next week.

If Baltimore wins in Cincinnati, the Ravens get a bye. If the Bengals win, they clinch the No. 6 seed in the AFC playoffs.

The Steelers will be rooting for Cincinnati to sneak in. Pittsburgh can still win the division and get a bye if they beat the Browns and the Ravens lose. The Steelers still have an outside shot for the No. 1 seed if they won and both the Ravens and Patriots lose.

All the AFC North games will be at 4:15 p.m. ET. If the Bengals lose, things get complicated. The Titans, Jets, and Raiders are also alive for the last wild card spot if Cincinnati falls. Oakland could also win the AFC West.

The Bengals could even lose and make the playoffs if they end up in a two-way tie with the Titans at 9-7.

The Jets need a miracle.

Rex Ryan?s crew doesn?t look like a team good enough to win in Miami next week. Even if the Jets win, they need a ton of help to get into the playoffs.

Here?s what needs to happen for the Jets to make it: They need to win and they need a Bengals loss, a Titans loss, and a Raiders or Broncos loss.

The Titans also need a complicated combination of events to make it. Their scenarios are listed right here.

Texans are the No. 3 seed in the AFC.

This much we know for sure. They will avoid the Ravens or Steelers in the first round.

It?s down to the Raiders and Broncos in the AFC West.

The Chiefs and Chargers are out after Saturday?s results. The Raiders and Broncos are both 8-7. The Broncos still hold the tiebreaker advantage over Oakland, so the Broncos still control their fate. They are in with a win next week against Kyle Orton and the Chiefs. How great a matchup is that?

The Raiders can win the division if they beat San Diego in Oakland and Denver loses to the Chiefs. ?Oakland also has a shot for the final wild card spot. It?s possible Oakland could win and still miss the playoffs.

To get the wild card, the Raiders would need a win, a Bengals loss, and a Titans loss. Or a win, a Bengals loss, and a Jets win.

Got all that?

Merry Christmas anyway.

Roethlisberger will not start for Steelers (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Injured Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will definitely not start and probably will not play at all on Saturday when the Steelers host the St. Louis Rams, the National Football League team said on Friday.

Roethlisberger, who has a badly sprained left ankle, will be replaced by back-up Charlie Batch in the starting role, the Steelers said.

Roethlisberger was listed as questionable for the game.

Despite the injury that has limited his mobility, the two-time Super Bowl winner started Monday's game at San Francisco and passed for 330 yards but was intercepted three times in the 20-3 loss to the 49ers.

Coach Mike Tomlin decided to go with Batch against St. Louis, though, with the Steelers (10-4) already having clinched a playoff berth. They remain in the race for the AFC North Division title.

Batch, 39, has compiled a 4-2 record with the Steelers over the past six years. His last start came in October 2010.

Economy ends tough 2011 on a surprising upswing (AP)

WASHINGTON ? WASHINGTON (AP) ? The economy is ending 2011 on a roll.

The job market is healthier. Americans are spending lustily on holiday gifts. A long-awaited turnaround for the depressed housing industry may be under way. Gas is cheaper. Factories are busier. Stocks are higher.

Not bad for an economy faced with a debt crisis in Europe and, as recently as last summer, scattered predictions of a second recession at home. Instead, the economy has grown faster each quarter this year, and the last three months should be the best.

"Things are looking up," says Chris Rupkey, chief financial economist at the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ.

When The Associated Press surveyed 43 economists in August, they pegged the likelihood of another recession at roughly one in four. The Dow Jones industrial average was lurching up or down by 400 points or more some days.

There was plenty of reason for gloom. A political standoff over the federal borrowing limit brought the United States to the brink of default and cost the nation its top-drawer credit rating.

Most analysts now rule out another recession. They think the economy will grow at an annual rate of more than 3 percent from October through December, the fastest pace since a 3.8 percent performance in the spring of last year.

Many economists still worry that the year-end surge isn't sustainable, in part because the average worker's pay is barely rising. And Europe may already be sliding into a recession that will infect the United States.

The outlook could darken further if Congress can't break the impasse blocking an extension of a Social Security tax cut for 160 million Americans and emergency unemployment benefits.

Yet for now, the economy is on an upswing that few had predicted:

? JOBS: The number of people applying for unemployment benefits came in at 366,000 last week, down from a peak of 659,000 in March 2009. Even in good economic times, the figure would be between 280,000 and 350,000.

Employers have added at least 100,000 jobs five months in a row, the longest streak since 2006. And the unemployment rate fell from 9 percent in October to 8.6 percent last month, the lowest since March 2009.

Small businesses are hiring again, too, according to the National Federation of Independent Business.

Business is up at AG Salesworks in Norwood, Mass., which helps technology companies like Motorola find new customers. The firm has hired 26 workers to restore its staff to 56, erasing the job cuts from the recession. CEO Paul Alves plans to add an employee or two a month as long as growth continues.

"I do see more confidence than I saw 12 months ago," Alves says. "But it's good, not great. Robust isn't the word I'd use."

? SPENDING: The holiday shopping season has turned out better than anyone expected. Sales from November through Saturday were up 2.5 percent from last year. Americans have spent $32 billion online, 15 percent more than a year ago. Retails sales were up in November for the sixth month in a row. People are spending, in particular, on clothes, cars, electronics and furniture.

? CONSUMER CONFIDENCE: Americans felt better about the economy in November than they had since July, according to the Conference Board, a business group that tracks the mood of consumers.

The board's consumer confidence index climbed 15 points to 56 in November, the biggest one-month jump since April 2003. During the Great Recession, the index fell as low as 25.

"It seems like the confidence of the traditional American consumer is higher right now," says Jim Newman, executive vice president of operations at the digital marketing company Acquity Group, which has added 100 jobs since summer.

? GAS: Falling prices at the pump have freed more money for consumers to spend on appliances, furniture, vacations and other things that help drive the economy. The national average for regular unleaded has sunk to $3.21 a gallon since peaking at $3.98 in May, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge.

? INVENTORIES: Businesses are restocking shelves and warehouses, more confident that customers will buy their products. In October, their inventories were up 8.7 percent from a year earlier. An increase in inventories is expected to account for perhaps a third of growth this quarter.

The battered housing market might be showing signs of recovery. Home construction rose more than 9 percent in November from October, driven by apartment building. And the National Association of Realtors said Wednesday that sales of previously occupied homes rose 4 percent in November.

But housing is climbing out of a deep hole: The existing homes sold at an annual rate of 4.4 million ? well below the 6 million that would signal a healthy housing market. And the real-estate agents' trade group revealed Wednesday that it overstated sales by 3.5 million during and after the Great Recession.

Once they peer into 2012, economists turn cautious. Bernard Baumohl, chief economist with the Economic Outlook Group, says that stronger consumer spending "is absolutely unsustainable. .... Wages have not kept pace with inflation all year."

The government says that once you adjust for inflation, weekly earnings dropped 1.8 percent from November 2010 to last month. Consumers have used savings or credit cards to finance their purchases. Once bills come due in early 2012, Baumohl foresees a cutback in spending.

Baumohl is so pessimistic that he expects the economy to shrink at a 0.2 percent annual rate in the first three months of 2012 and to end the year with no more than 1.8 percent growth.

Europe is almost sure to slide into recession, even if its policymakers find a solution to the continent's debt crisis. In the worst case, a chaotic breakup of the euro currency could ignite a worldwide financial panic.

Joe Echevarria, CEO of the accounting and consulting firm Deloitte LLP, says his company's clients are delaying hiring or expansion decisions to see if Europe's crisis will be resolved.

Another worry ? again ? is Washington. President Barack Obama and Republicans in Congress still had not broken their impasse Wednesday on how to extend a Social Security tax cut. Without an extension, taxes will go up $1,000 in 2012 for someone making $50,000. A couple making $100,000 each would pay $4,000 more.

Failing to extend the tax cut, combined with the end of long-term unemployment benefits and other federal budget cuts, could shave 1.7 percentage points from growth in 2012, warns Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics.

Forecasters are also chastened by the past two years. Since the Great Recession officially ended in June 2009, the economy has stalled twice just when it appeared to be gaining momentum.

In mid-2010, businesses slowed spending sharply. This year, the damage came from protests in the Middle East that drove oil prices higher at the start of the year, the earthquake in Japan in March, budget cuts by state and local governments and the stalemate in Washington.

But Joel Naroff of Naroff Economic Advisors says he thinks the fears about next year are overblown and the economy will grow 3 percent in 2012. Next year will be all about jobs. If job growth keeps accelerating, the economy is much more likely to meet Naroff's predictions than the pessimists'.

In addition, Naroff says, that's because consumers and businesses have grown more confident. If Europe averts disaster ? a crackup of the eurozone ? and endures only a mild recession, as Naroff expects, the impact on the United States will be minimal, he says.

"If you stopped the average person on the street and asked, `Are you slowing your spending because of what's happening in Europe?' they'd ask, `What planet are you from?'"

Medicare doctors fed up with Washington

Medicare, doctors, Congress

Dr. Robert Wergin, a family physician based in Milford, Neb. said a 27.4% cut to his Medicare payments would devastate his practice.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The payroll tax impasse in Congress has put Medicare doctors on edge over the likelihood that their pay could be slashed 27.4% in two weeks time.

Under current law, health care providers to the nation's 45 million Medicare beneficiaries -- including physicians, nurse practitioners, physical therapists and podiatrists -- face reduced government reimbursement payments on Jan. 1.

But the payroll tax cut bill also includes a "patch" that would have prevented the Medicare payment cuts from occurring in the New Year.

The problem is that the bill, passed by the Senate, has been rejected by the House -- and both chambers of Congress, for now at least, have recessed for the year.

Dr. Robert Wergin, a family physician who operates a solo practice in Milford, Neb., is worried.

"I like to think these politicians are intelligent people and they will come to their senses," Wergin said. "Now I'm worried that maybe they won't."

As a rural family doctor, Wergin is especially vulnerable to Medicare cuts. About 30% of his 3,500 patients are on Medicare.

"Rural America has a growing aging population," said Wergin. "I have a larger number of Medicare patients. I have to see them. I can't limit how many I see for fear that they are not good for my business."

But this scenario also creates a challenging business environment for him. Wergin said he may be forced to pick up his business and move to a community with a smaller Medicare population.

"I really don't want to do that. I've lived in Milford for 20 years and have important ties to this community," he said.

Fed up with temporary fixes: For doctors who accept Medicare, the situation playing out in Washington is a familiar one.

Federal law requires that reimbursement rates be adjusted annually based on a formula tied to the health of the economy.

That law says rates should be cut every year to keep Medicare financially sound.

But Congress has blocked those cuts from happening 12 times over the past decade, and could still do so this year.

The American Academy of Family Physicians, which represents 100,300 family doctors, issued a statement Tuesday expressing "outrage that Congress failed to prevent the 27.4% Medicare physician pay cut mandated by current law."

"For some family physicians, Medicare patients comprise as much as eight in 10 of their patients. No business can sustain such immediate and draconian cuts to their revenue," the group said.

The continuing uncertainty and temporary fixes by Congress are driving doctors away from Medicare patients, said Dr. Glen Stream, president of the family medicine organization.

He said 13% of his group's members, in a survey last year, said they would not longer see Medicare patients if pay cuts went through.

"People also don't think of doctors' practices as small businesses, but many of them are. The only revenue coming in is payment for services," he said.

Dr. Daniel Spogen left his private practice six years ago because he wanted to "get rid of the Medicare payment problems."

He is currently a professor and chairman of the family medicine department at the University of Nevada's School of Medicine.

"Luckily 50% of my former patients followed me and stayed as my patients after I joined the university," he said. But Medicare's payment problems have followed him there, too.

As state funding for the university hospital has decreased recently, Spogen said the hospital is relying on Medicare payments to not only adequately pay doctors but to also help in keeping the school going.

Deborah Chollet, senior fellow and health economist at Mathematica Policy Research, expects the annual brinksmanship over Medicare payment cuts could drag on for a few more years.

"It's not a pleasant situation for anyone," she said. "There will be a tipping point. What this will do over time is eliminate the solo practice doctor and push the health care system on a bumpy ride to a new environment."?To top of page

BBC moves towards HTML5 for websites, tells Flash it'll still be friends

Even the British occasionally have to change with the times. Following a study stating that 80 percent of all web video is now compatible with HTML5, the BBC has formally adopted the standard for videos on the desktop and mobile versions of its website. The full roll-out across BBC.com follows a pilot program in which the broadcaster tested HTML5 on the the Health section of the site. According to Electronista, the BBC has been working with HTML5 delivery systems throughout 2011 to build its iPlayer apps for the iOS. In other news, the BBC has just texted Flash and said it's totally open to staying friends and meeting up for coffee sometime.

PocketCloud Explore arrives for Android, enables file searching and viewing across multiple computers

A new product has hit the Android Market and we think you might find it quite nifty. Known as PocketCloud Explore, the app allows users to search for and view files across their PCs and Macs, all without ever needing to surrender data to the cloud. Simple file management is also part of the game, as users can remotely create, rename and delete both folders and documents, as well as upload files from their smartphone to the remote destination. The basic version of PocketCloud Explore retails for $4.99, which is limited to two associated computers. For users juggling additional boxes and lappies, the developer plans to introduce a premium service that will allow access to a greater number of systems. Even the basic product, however, offers unlimited transfers, which means your files will always be within reach. Curious for more? You'll find the full PR after the break.

Video: Whoopi Goldberg Farts on The View

Here is the video of Whoopi Goldberg farting on The View. The incident occurred on Friday December 16th and as you can imagine is super duper gross. Claire Danes was the delightful guest who apparently bored Whoopi enough that she let out a loud ripper. She readily admits it too, saying “Oh excuse me, I think I just blew a little frog out of there.” Ms. Danes is shocked. As anyone would be shocked. She was graceful not to reach over and back slap Whoopi. She just laughed a little and continued. My view is that Whoopi Goldberg does not have any self-respect. She is overweight which is often a sign of depression. She slinks in her chair which is usually a sign of insecurity. Yes she is funny to a point. But hilarious? No. In fact I really do not know what she has done worthwhile since that singing nun movie that was made 20 years ago. Today she was just gross which is the sign of a lazy comedian. The best comedians are the ones who do not have to shock you to get a reaction. What are your thoughts about Whoopi Goldberg farting? See the video from [...]

ICC prosecutor: Gadhafi death may be war crime (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? The chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Court said Thursday there are "serious suspicions" that the death of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi was a war crime.

Luis Moreno Ocampo told reporters after briefing the U.N. Security Council that he sent a letter to the head of the National Transitional Council asking what the government's plans are to investigate alleged war crimes by all parties, including the rebels.

The uprising against Gadhafi's 42-year rule erupted in February, quickly escalated into civil war, and ended in October with Gadhafi's capture and death in unclear circumstances. Witness accounts and video taken of the deposed dictator after his capture by rebel fighters show that he was beaten and abused by his captors, and there were strong indications he was killed in custody.

"The death of Moammar Gadhafi is one of the issues to be clarified ? what happened ? because there are serious suspicions that it was a war crime," Moreno Ocampo said.

He said what the ICC does on Gadhafi's death and other war crimes will depend on what Libya's interim government does because under the Rome statute that established the war crimes tribunal, the ICC only steps in if national authorities are unwilling or unable to act.

Moreno Ocampo said his office is working closely with Libyan authorities not only on Gadhafi's case but on those of his son, Seif al-Islam, and former intelligence chief, Abdullah al-Senoussi, who were captured and face ICC charges of crimes against captured for their roles in the uprising.

Libya's new leaders have said they will try Seif al-Islam at home even though they have yet to set up a strong court system. The ICC wants to be certain the government will be capable of putting on a fair trial for Seif al-Islam and al-Senoussi.

Moreno Ocampo said in an AP interview that the judges at the ICC have asked the National Transitional Council to inform them of their plans before Jan. 10. He said if the government challenges the ICC's jurisdiction, it will be up to the judges to decide where the two accused will be tried.

In the meantime, he said, his office is continuing its investigation.

"We are sure there were massive rapes, quite sure," Moreno Ocampo said. "We're trying to define who ordered them."

The Security Council referred incidents stemming from the Libyan uprising to the ICC and Moreno Ocampo said he promised the council that he would present his strategy for the continuing investigation of possible war crimes in his next report in May.

After Seif al-Islam's arrest, Moreno Ocampo flew to the Libyan capital late last month and met with government officials.

He said in an AP interview that the officials offered him the opportunity to meet Seif al-Islam. But he said he declined because Gadhafi's son would have needed to have a lawyer present and he had not asked to see the prosecutor.

Moreno Ocampo said the Libyan authorities told him it was "very important" to prosecute Seif al-Islam themselves for two reasons ? he is "the face of the old regime" and "they would like to show they can do better than with Moammar" and conduct a proper trial.

"If they can convince the (ICC) judges," Moreno Ocampo said, "we don't need to go and fight for a case."

Amy Winehouse will be remembered on Sunday at the "VH1 Divas concert. Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine, Wanda Jackson, and Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will all take the stage to honor the late singer. The tribute will be introduced by Nas.

Jackson and Welch will perform Winehouse's "Back to Black," while Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will take the stage with "You Know I'm No Good." The Dap-Kings played on the singer's Back to Black album. Nas and Winehouse worked together on the track "Like Smoke," which appears on her posthumous album Lioness: Hidden Treasures.

Mary J. Blige, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Jill Scott, Florence and the Machine, and Jessie J will participate in the star-studded lineup for the long-running concert event, which airs Monday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on VH1.

This year, VH1 is paying tribute to prominent birthplaces of soul music, including Chicago, Detroit, London, Memphis and Philadelphia. The divas are expected to pay homage to these cities and the genre with their own soulful tracks as well as some of soul music's classic tunes onstage at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom.

And the celebration is not exclusive to women. The Roots have been confirmed as the event's house band, and ?uestlove is set to pull double duty during the concert as musical director. Boyz II Men and Travie McCoy will also perform.

Bruno Mars, Russell Brand and Tony Bennett paid tribute to Amy Winehouse at the VMAs back in August. Mars performed Winehouse's cover of the Zutons' "Valerie," while Bennett was on hand to present footage of their recording session for his album Duets II.

"This is not just another London chancer, not just another person milling about waiting to be famous," Brand recalled of seeing Winehouse perform during the tribute. "What is this incredible sound? This timeless sound like a roar from the guts of humanity? The kind of voice that Billie Holiday sung with, the kind of voice that Ella Fitzgerald sung with."

Apple pulls driver's license app from store

DriversEd.com

By Suzanne Choney

An iPhone app meant to provide driver's education to students around the country has been pulled by Apple from the App Store after a campaign to do so by a U.S. senator and the Coalition for a Secure Driver's License. Both contend that the DriversEd app includes templates that can be used to create fake driver's licenses in any state, which can then be printed and laminated "creating a high-quality counterfeit driver's license difficult to discern from one that's genuine."

The creators of the app say that's just not so, saying it was "specifically and deliberately designed ... to prevent the creation of counterfeit identification."

Live Poll

This 'fake license' issue is:

  • 170876

Crazy. There's no way anyone would mistake it for the real thing.

    43%

  • 170877

Real. There's enough problems out there with this adding to the mix.

    30%

  • 170878

A little harsh. The 'license' is clearly for fun only.

    27%

VoteTotal Votes: 1240

The company says that since 2009, the free app, which is more about driving laws than fake licenses, "has allowed users to put their faces on a low-res mockup of their state's license. The app is a digital-age version of using a photo booth at the beach."

When an app license is printed, the "output is only 72 dpi, which is in fact the same resolution as the $10,000 Mitt Romney Bill released ... by the Democratic National Committee," DriversEd.com said.

Any license created with the app "cannot be mistaken for a fake ID because the design elements deliberately do not correspond to government issued ID."

"By design, it would take more effort and expertise to modify the product of the DriversEd.com 'Driver License' app than to construct a counterfeit from scratch," said Gary Tsifrin, DriversEd.com founder and chief operating officer, in a statement.

The app incorporates "obvious layout differences, font and color discrepancies, and the words 'MOCK by DriversEd.com' in proximity to the word 'license,' and has "none of the security features of a modern government-issued ID."

(While the "MOCK' phrase is there ? see example above ? it is a bit tinier than it probably should be, which could be among the reasons the coalition objected, and Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pennsylvania, took up the cause.)

The coalition unsuccessfully tried last spring to get the app pulled; it was the senator's letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook that seems to have done the trick. (We've asked Apple for comment.)

In his letter, Casey said that the app "can be used to create counterfeit identity documents. I believe this application poses a threat to public safety and national security, and I request that you remove it from the App Store immediately."

Further, he wrote:

While DriversEd.com markets the app as a fun game, it can also be used in a way that allows criminals to create a new identity, steal someone else?s identity, or permit underage youth to purchase alcohol or tobacco illegally. National security systems depend on the trustworthiness of driver?s licenses, yet with a counterfeit license created by this app, a terrorist could bypass identity verification by the Transportation Security Administration, or even apply for a passport.

DriversEd.com obviously disagrees with Apple's decision, and is appealing.

"We believe Apple pulled the app prematurely," the company said in a statement. "We hope ... Apple will take one more look at the DriversEd.com 'Driver License' app.?

And pulling the app from the App Store doesn't totally eradicate it. It's also available for Android in the Android Market.

Elizabeth Taylor Jewels Fetch Record $115 Million (omg!)

Elizabeth Taylor Jewels Fetch Record $115 Million

Elizabeth Taylor's jewelry collection sold for a whopping $115 million last night to set a world record for the most valuable private collection of jewels sold at auction.

Among the items sold at Christie's auction house in New York City for the highest prices were a pearl necklace owned by the late actress that fetched $11.8 million and a 33.19-carat diamond ring given to her by husband Richard Burton that brought in more than $8.8 million. The auction collection included necklaces, earrings, pendants, rings and other gems.

The ring, which was estimated to sell for $2.5 million to $3.5 million, was purchased by a private buyer from Asia, according to a spokesman for Christie's. Another high-profile item sold was a diamond bracelet given to the Hollywood icon by pop star Michael Jackson. The bracelet had an estimated sale price of $30,000 to $50,000, but ended up selling for $194,500.

Taylor -- who starred in screen classics including Giant, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof -- died in Los Angeles in March at age 79.

Her son Chris Wilding issued the following statement on the auction: "We are extremely gratified by the spectacular results of the jewelry sale last night at Christie's. My mother was an admirer and collector of extraordinary things. The outcome of the sale is a testament to her connoisseurship as well as to the remarkable talents of the team at Christie's. We are deeply moved by the incredible response to her collection. She would be happy to know that her wish for her jewelry to be owned and enjoyed by others was fulfilled."

An additional sale of some of Taylor's art, clothing and memorabilia will be held later in the week and her collection of impressionist and modern art is scheduled to go on sale at Christie's in London in February. Part of the proceeds will benefit The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, which she established in 1991 to help people living with AIDS.

Indonesia rakes in the gold at the Southeast Asian Games

At this year's Southeast Asian Games, Indonesia brought home an astounding 182 gold medals.?

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.?

Indonesia glowed with gold as it captured the top of the medals tally at the 26th Southeast Asian Games, beating out Thailand, the third week in November. The biennial event brings together the 11 countries of Southeast Asia and includes competitions ranging from swimming to badminton to wushu ? a full-contact variation of a traditional Chinese martial art.

Indonesia had hoped the event would highlight its increasingly powerful role in the region, but a scandal involving rigged bids for the construction of athletes? dormitories and poor planning that threatened to delay some events drew criticism from visiting officials.

Despite its increasing economic heft, Indonesia hasn?t topped the medals table since it last hosted the games in 1997, during the reign of autocratic President Suharto.?

The games themselves were not without incident. Rowdy Indonesian soccer fans barraged the Malaysian soccer team during its semifinal match to the extent that its coaches called for an armored vehicle escort into the stadium for the gold-medal match against Indonesia. Malaysia won on a penalty shot.?

But neither archrivals nor scandals could dim the light of this emerging nation at the end of the games. Indonesia finished the week-long competition with more than 182 gold medals.

Iran says it shot down unmanned US spy plane (AP)

TEHRAN, Iran ? Iran's armed forces have shot down an unmanned U.S. spy plane that violated Iranian airspace along the country's eastern border, the official IRNA news agency reported Sunday.

An unidentified military official quoted in the report warned of a strong and crushing response to any violations of the country's airspace by American drone aircraft.

"An advanced RQ-170 unmanned American spy plane was shot down by Iran's armed forces. It suffered minor damage and is now in possession of Iran's armed forces," IRNA quoted the official as saying.

No further details were published.

Iran is locked in a dispute with the U.S. and its allies over Tehran's disputed nuclear program, which the West believes is aimed at developing nuclear weapons. Iran denies the accusations, saying its nuclear program is entirely peaceful and that it seeks to generate electricity and produce isotopes to treat medical patients.

The type of aircraft Iran says it downed, an RQ-170 Sentinel, is made by Lockheed Martin and was reportedly used to keep watch on Osama bin Laden's compound in Pakistan as the raid that killed him was taking place earlier this year.

The surveillance aircraft is equipped with stealth technology, but the U.S. Air Force has not made public any specifics about the drone.

Iran said in January that two pilotless spy planes it had shot down over its airspace were operated by the United States and offered to put them on public display.

The Islamic Republic holds frequent military drills, primarily to assert an ability to defend against a potential U.S. or Israeli attack on its nuclear facilities.

Tehran has focused part of its military strategy on producing drones for reconnaissance and attacking purposes.

Iran announced three years ago it had built an unmanned aircraft with a range of more than 600 miles (1,000 kilometers), far enough to reach Israel.

Ahmadinejad unveiled Iran's first domestically built unmanned bomber aircraft in August 2010, calling it an "ambassador of death" to Iran's enemies.

How Romney could lose to Gingrich... just like Romney's dad lost to Nixon (The Week)

New York ? George Romney was a real contender in 1968, until a supposedly washed-up Richard Nixon cleverly outflanked him. Could Mitt face a similar fate?

In 1968, a moderate Republican governor named George Romney was running for president against a vulnerable Democratic incumbent, and Romney's main argument was that he was electable, say Paul Goldman and Mark J. Rozell in USA Today. In the Michigan governor's way were the "Goldwaterites," a group of conservative insurgents who seemed destined to lose ? and Richard Nixon, once "the party's premier political thinker" whose "rising star had crashed." What happened next should make Romney's son, Mitt, very nervous. Here, an excerpt:

Despite all the electability hype, one Republican instinctively knew Romney couldn't win the GOP nomination: Richard Nixon. Dwight Eisenhower's former veep knew that the Goldwaterites didn't consider him sufficiently conservative.... So during the run-up to the New Hampshire primary, Nixon plotted his comeback, mending conservative fences in private, content to let the Michigan governor have the spotlight. By the time the candidate whom conservatives always wanted to run ? California Gov. Ronald Reagan ? entered the race, the clever Nixon had the nomination sewn up....

Fast forward to the 2012 GOP nomination cycle. Once again, a Romney is running as Mr. Electable, stuck at 20-30 percent in the polls.... Enter the Richard Nixon of his era, the old warhorse, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. The Georgian, like Nixon, was a back-bencher in Congress until shrewd conservative politics and good luck propelled them on to the national stage. Each, in turn, became a shooting star, a mixture of personal and political foibles seemingly smashing forever his dreams of becoming president.

Until a Romney showed up.

(AP) ? Bill Snyder wouldn't bite when he was asked to compare this season's Kansas State team to those of years past, Wildcats that won Big 12 championships and went to prestigious bowl games.

"I reserve the right to make those judgments until the end of the season," the longtime coach said, "and then I'll find a way to avoid the question."

It's going to be an inevitable one.

John Hubert ran for 120 yards and the go-ahead touchdown Saturday, helping the No. 16 Wildcats beat Iowa State 30-23 and keeping alive their chances for a share of the conference title.

Picked to finish eighth in the Big 12, Kansas State (10-2, 7-2) instead put together one of the best seasons in school history. Led by the 72-year-old Snyder, the plucky Wildcats managed to beat everyone they faced except for Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, the two teams who were to decide Saturday night whether they would share in a conference championship.

If the Sooners beat their rivals in Bedlam, there would be a three-way tie.

"It's been a journey," said Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein, who ran for a touchdown and threw for another against the Cyclones. "We've had a lot of ups and downs, but over the course we've been able to make improvements so we're a better team."

Jeff Woody ran for 85 yards and two touchdowns for the Cyclones (6-6, 3-6), who became bowl eligible for the second time under Paul Rhoads when they knocked off the Cowboys a couple weeks ago.

They nearly managed another upset against the Wildcats.

Hubert scored the go-ahead touchdown on a tackle-breaking 26-yard run with 3:29 left, which gave Iowa State plenty of time to answer. Freshman quarterback Jared Barnett converted a pair of third downs to move into Kansas State territory, and then scrambled for eight yards on third-and-10.

Facing fourth-and-2 at the 31, Woody took the handoff and was stuffed at the line of scrimmage, the ball popping out. Kansas State recovered it to seal the victory.

"This is the No. 11 team in the BCS," Rhoads said, "and with 1:07 to go, we're driving down to tie the game and send it into overtime."

Both teams now await their bowl destinations.

The Wildcats could be headed anywhere from one of the BCS games as an at-large selection to the Alamo or Cotton bowls, though Snyder said he won't be campaigning before announcements are made Sunday night. The Cyclones, meanwhile, will be headed to a game for the second time in three years.

"K-State was only favored in four games and they won 10," Woody said. "We were favored in two and we won six, so we're two tremendously similar teams, and that showed."

After lightning delayed the kickoff 90 minutes, the Cyclones jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Barnett threw a pass that wobbled so much it looked as if the ball was deflating, but Darius Darks managed to get the inside position on cornerback Nigel Malone and hauled in the 30-yard catch.

The Wildcats needed 15 seconds to answer.

Klein dropped back and floated a pass on a deep post route to Tramaine Thompson, one of the fastest players on the team. He caught it with his fingertips just past the outstretched hands of defensive back Ter'Ran Benton and raced the rest of the way untouched for the 68-yard touchdown, the longest play from scrimmage for Kansas State this season.

"We had a play called and Collin saw coverage he liked," Thompson said. "So we switched it around. I was hoping he saw it. When he checked to it, I was so happy."

Iowa State regained the lead moments later when Woody plunged in from a yard out, but Zach Guyer's extra point was blocked by Raphael Guidry, his fourth blocked kick of the season.

Anthony Cantele kicked a 37-yard field goal for the Wildcats to get within 13-10.

Kansas State took over at its own 38 just before halftime, and Klein mixed in a couple of option keepers along with a pair of 14-yard completions to Hubert. The sophomore running back took the second of them down to the goal line, and Klein's TD sneak gave Kansas State a 17-13 lead at the break.

Guidry's second big play, this time an interception off a tipped ball, gave Kansas State prime field position early in the third quarter, and Cantele's 47-yard field goal made it 20-13.

Iowa State responded by going 64 yards in 12 plays, converting three third downs, and Woody's rumbling 13-yard scamper allowed the Cyclones to draw even with 4:25 left in the quarter.

Kansas State squandered a chance to take a touchdown lead, failing to score in three tries from the 3 before Cantele knocked through his third field goal of the game. The Cyclones matched it when they converted a pair of fourth downs and Guyer made a 43-yarder with 6:12 left.

The Cyclones finally ran out of answers, though, and they still haven't beaten the Wildcats in Manhattan since 2004 ? the last time they had a winning season.

"Everybody is hurting. This was definitely a struggle," Barnett said. "We were just executing. I don't think K-State was expecting us to come out that way, and we just kind of took advantage of it, but then they definitely started catching on and made some adjustments."
