HTC overcomes supply issues, will double production capacity this month

After months of supply issues and courtroom wrangling, HTC might have finally put its hardware woes behind it. The company's North Asian president, Jack Tong, let slip that production capacity for the HTC One will double this month and continue to increase in June to meet "strong demand." Tong also casually dropped into conversation that the J Butterfly saw its own sales double in Japan when it became free on contract -- so perhaps those second-quarter financial results won't make for such depressing reading.

Can Dolphins Really ?Hear? Human Tumors?

Can dolphins detect cancer in people? To some scientists, it?s not even a legitimate hypothesis; and to many animal-rights activists, ?swim-with-the-dolphin? cancer diagnostic centers would be no less objectionable than any other form of captivity.

?Thank God to this little dolphin, Keppler. He saved my life,? Stoops says.

But what if the rather far-fetched idea were true? What if we tested dolphins and discovered they can detect tiny tumors and abnormal growths in humans, perhaps even those missed by state-of-the-art technology? Instead of x-rays, MRIs and CAT scans, will patients one day be clamoring for cetacean-grams?

Probably not. But I, for one, believe the hypothesis is plausible. Others are positively convinced it is fact, including Patricia Stoops of Panama City, Florida, who claims that a captive dolphin named Keppler saved her life after a chance meeting at a swim-with program in the Caribbean.

Stoops was on a Carnival cruise in the British Virgin Islands when she eagerly signed up for the ?dolphin excursion? on the island of Tortola.?

She and about 15 others entered the water as a group of captive dolphins approached them and began interacting as normal. But one dolphin, Keppler, took a keen interest in Stoops and refused to leave her alone.

?He did a flip in front of me,? she told WJHG-TV news in Panama City. ?He kept running into me and I explained to the trainer that the dolphin had hit me. He said, ?Oh, that's unusual.? The dolphin trainer said the dolphin detected something wrong with me.?

Stoops was taken aback by what the trainer?s said next: He asked if her trip was sponsored by the Make-A-Wish Foundation, to fulfill a final wish of swimming with dolphins.

?He asked if I'd ever had cancer. I said, ?no way!?? she said. In fact, she had never been healthier in her life. But, she would soon discover, that was not true.

A week after returning home, Stoops noticed some pain in her chest. Thinking it had something to do with the dolphin encounter, she went to the doctor, who discovered a spot on her lung and diagnosed her with lung cancer. Now cancer free, she hopes to visit the animal in the fall.

?Thank God to this little dolphin, Keppler. He saved my life,? Stoops says.

Of course, the chain-of-events are likely coincidental, even though eerily similar, unverified accounts are posted online. Michael T. Hyson, PhD, research director at the Hawaii-based Sirius Institute, which advocates captive dolphins as therapy for people with autism and other disorders, writes about a dolphin named Dreamer possessed with seemingly miraculous abilities to heal and diagnose humans.

?A woman swimming with Dreamer thought she had been rammed,? Hyson writes. ?The woman was taken to hospital for examination. The woman had a large bruise. X-ray revealed that under the ribs, near the center of the bruised area, there was a small tumor.? It is my feeling that Dreamer likely "zapped" the tumor with a powerful sound pulse, perhaps to heal it, and the high intensity sound left bruising from hydrostatic shock. At the least, the bruising called medical attention to the tumor.?

Meanwhile, ?Dolphins have been known to detect certain types of cancer and pregnancy in some people,? WJHG reports, ?But experts say there is no clinical research to back up those behaviors.

There has been no research in this regard, though it would be fairly simple. Dolphins could be put in the water with people with various stages of cancer and healthy controls. You could have, say, 15 controls and one patient. If a dolphin displayed unusual behaviors around that person, it?s possible the animal detects something.

Most experts I asked didn?t really know how to answer the question, ?Is this possible??

Michael Miller, spokesman at the National Cancer Institute, tells TakePart that NCI ?has never conducted research of this type and I don?t know of anyone we could point you to for more information.? A search of the published literature turns up nothing.

Neuroscientist and dolphin expert Dr. Lori Marino of Emory University and The Kimmela Center for Animal Advocacy, rules out the idea.

?This is all a coincidence and nothing more,? says Marino, an outspoken opponent of dolphinariums and other forms of captivity.??Despite the mythology, there is no evidence that dolphins can detect cancers and other diseases in the human body,? she says.??Why was the dolphin ramming the woman and getting excited? It could be for a number of reasons?agitation, play, but none of them show the dolphin detected the cancer.?

There is evidence to suggest that dogs, and cats, can be trained to detect certain forms of cancer in the breath or urine of people, though the science on that is slim. ?We are not aware of any convincing evidence to show that dogs can detect cancer in patients,? says Andrew Becker, director of media relations at the American Cancer Society.

There are few published studies on dogs, cancer and diagnosis. A literature review?published last year in an ?effort to determine whether dogs have a role to play in modern health care as an alert tool or screening system for ill health,? especially cancer, seizures and hypoglycemia, highlighted ?weaknesses in the work? and proposed ?directions for future studies,? hardly a decisive conclusion.

As for low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), in one study of 138 diabetes patients with dogs, 65.1% of respondents said their pet ?had shown a behavioral reaction to at least one of their hypoglycemic episodes, with 31.9% of animals reacting to 11 or more events.??

If dogs can detect human cancer, they do so with their keen sense of smell. But dolphins have little or no ability to smell. Underwater, their world is informed primarily by sound and electric waves.

The ability of whales and dolphins to emit and receive high-frequency sounds, called echolocation, has long baffled and awed scientists. Even today, we do not fully understand the remarkable process, which literally lies outside our own brains? ability to perform.

I became fascinated by echolocation when researching Death at SeaWorld,?a book about killer whales, the world?s largest dolphins.

Dolphins have a sac atop their skulls called the ?melon,? filled with a fine, waxy oil. They can manipulate nasal sacs behind their melon to make clicking noises, which sound like fingers running over a comb and each last from one to five milliseconds. As I wrote in the book:

Sound travels through water about four and a half times faster than air - around one mile per second. When each click pings off an object, part of the sound wave is sent back toward the dolphin, where it is received through fatty tissue located in the lower jaw. From there it is transmitted to the middle ear and the brain.

Each click is exquisitely synchronized so that outgoing sounds do not interfere with incoming ones: each echo is received before the next sound is dispatched. The amount of time that lapses between a sound and its echo tells the dolphin how far away an object is. By sending and receiving a continuous string of clicks, all dolphins can follow moving objects (like food) and home in on them. ???????

The visual and auditory regions of dolphin brains are highly integrated, allowing them to construct visual images based on echoes. Their accuracy is astonishing.

Dolphins can differentiate between objects with less than 10 percent difference in size, down to a few millimeters. They can do this in a noisy environment, even while vocalizing. And they can echolocate on near and distant targets simultaneously, something that boggles the imagination of human sonar experts. ?? Even a modern supercomputer using thousands of times more energy could never produce such an accurate visual image based merely on the echoes of pings.

For example, resident orca populations in the Pacific Northwest covet Chinook salmon, which are large and energy-rich. Thanks to echolocation, they can ?distinguish a species of salmon by its size, or by echolocating inside the fish?s body to determine the dimensions of its air bladder,? I wrote in the book.

Researchers wonder how female dolphins discover they?re pregnant, and some believe other dolphins detect the fetus through echolocation and communicate that to the mother. In killer whales, such information would be crucial for mothers to prevent sexually mature daughters from mating with the bulls who sired them.

Even Marino agrees that, ?There is some anecdotal evidence that dolphins may be able to detect pregnancy.? But, she adds, ?in that case, it is plausible because they can use echolocation to examine a woman's anatomy and determine if there is another body inside of her moving about. That is not the case with cancer and disease.?

But maybe dolphins can ?read? our electromagnetic waves, and tell if something is wrong. The new issue of Science News?reports on the recently discovered ability of dolphins to sense electrical signals from other animals in the water, such as those emanating from heartbeats, muscle contractions or gills. Believed to be the only mammals capable of ?electroreception,? dolphins are equipped with unusual sensory organs on their rostrums (snouts) called crypts that can detect electric impulses.

One former dolphin researcher, who asked not to be identified because it?s sensitive, ?and I put it in the highly suspect category,? did admit that cancer detection by cetaceans was ?possible,? albeit through intelligent observation, not echolocation or electroreception.

?If Make-a-Wish takes people down there, the dolphin could?ve figured out that some people get special treatment and attention from others, such as help in swimming, and decided to figure out what sets the special people apart,? my source said.??The dolphin may have made a game of seeing what is different about the swimmers, then pointing it out.?

The ex-researcher, and many other cetacean activists, couldn?t justify captive dolphins for detecting human illness. I have not made up my mind. If I knew my mother might be saved through early detection by a dip with some dolphins, would I try to stop her? It?s a hypothetical topic for another day.

We may never know if dolphins can ?hear? our cancers. But we do know their echolocation is exquisite enough to copy. Researchers at Tel Aviv University are studying echolocation in bats, moles and dolphins to help develop sophisticated ultrasound machines for prenatal care and cancer detection.

?But,? they caution in a press release, ?when it comes to more accurate sonar and ultrasound, animals' ?biosonar? capabilities still have the human race beat.?

Texas tornadoes devastate neighborhood built by residents, Habitat for Humanity

Daylight reveals the trail of destruction in Texas left by tornadoes that ripped through the state killing at least six people. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

Dozens of families who lived in homes they helped build with their own hands saw their neighborhood devastated by a tornado that struck north Texas on Wednesday night.

Habitat for Humanity, a Christian group that organizes volunteers to build homes for the needy, had worked with residents to construct 61 houses in the Rancho Brazos neighborhood that was battered by the twister in Granbury, Texas.?

Aerial footage taken Thursday showed home after home in Granbury completely demolished, with others severely damaged. Six adults have been confirmed dead after what the National Weather Service said were three tornadoes that swept through Montague and Hood counties in northern Texas.

Rancho Brazos was a ?well-knit? neighborhood were people kept their lawns trimmed and their single-story homes in top shape, said Asa Maddox, 68.

?The neighborhood was pretty immaculate,? he said.

The winds that whipped up on Wednesday night spared Maddox?s 897-square-foot home, but lifted up the metal lawnmower shed in his yard and blew out the windows on a van in his driveway, he said. He and his wife took shelter in their home?s laundry room with their dog.

?I had heard the sirens going off and it was a continuous blast from the sirens, so I knew that there was some sort of a weather deal coming on,? Maddox said. ?Then all of a sudden my lights went out and it started hailing, I mean everywhere from pea-sized all the way up to baseball-sized hail coming down and really hitting my roof.?

Gusts bent trees in his yard and sent debris flying toward his home, Maddox said.

?I could hear a real loud noise, and as I listened it was getting louder and louder,? Maddox said as the tornado approached his home around 8 p.m. local time on Wednesday. ?I kind of peeked out around and I saw the wind was blowing real, real, real hard.?

Maddox drove out of the neighborhood in the dark Wednesday night. His home was mostly spared, he said.

?The mobile home that was on my right is there. The roof?s pretty much gone,? Maddox said. ?The other side of my house is another Habitat house about the same size as mine and it was still there.?

Another Habitat-built home down the street was not so fortunate.

?It just shattered. It disappeared,? Maddox said.

A retired service technician who worked in a mobile-home factory, Maddox said he has been in the Rancho Brazos home he built with the help of Habitat for Humanity volunteers since 2009. It was a ?joyous occasion? when he moved into the home equipped with all-new appliances, he said. He said he has been in touch with his insurance agent and expects to be back on his feet soon.

?I thank God for sparing my house and myself, and I feel real, real bad about the people who lost their house, lost everything,? he said. ?If there was a way that I could help them I would.?

Habitat for Humanity volunteers were working to finish two more homes for waiting families on the day the twister struck, said Michelle Kennedy, assistant director for Trinity Habitat for Humanity, a nearby affiliate that was supporting the local Hood County Habitat organization on Thursday.

?The house that was under construction this week survived,? Kennedy said. ?The house that was ready to dedicate on Saturday was completely destroyed.?

Kennedy said she helped one homeowner who collapsed in tears in the hallway of Granbury?s First Christian Church, where about 50 Rancho Brazos residents took shelter with help from the Red Cross.

?It?s devastating,? Kennedy said.

?The thing that?s different about Habitat is that families actually work in the building of the homes,? she said. ?They have a deep interest not only in their homes but in the community. This devastation, it almost gives them a sense of hopelessness.?

Habitat of Hood County?s newsletter recounts the work done by its volunteers over the years, including some overseas. Families contribute at least 300 hours of work to building the home they will move in to, according to the newsletter.?Each house costs about $50,500 to build, according to the group's website.

Volunteers from Hood County also began partnering with Habitat for Humanity Kyrgyzstan in 2003, according to a post on the non-profit?s website. The Texans helped build homes for nearly two dozen families in Kyrgyzstan, HFH Hood County executive director Carol Davidson said in the post.

Artisanal Mining (galamsey) ? An Opportunity Or A Problem?

'We don't know there are rather challenges and not problems. We don't even know opportunities abound in challenges, and we certainly don't also know how to unearth these opportunities to inure to our benefit.' This is a classic sign of mediocrity.

Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM), which is referred to in the Ghanaian parlance as 'GALAMSEY', is a practice dating back to pre-historic days.

ASM often involves the art of teasing gold from the earth through washing it out of the soils and gravels where it is found. This practice could also be referred to as placer mining, where gold is found in unconsolidated deposits in sand and gravels at locations where the Large Scale Mining (LSM) companies usually do not buy concessions.

ASM contributed nine percent of total gold production in 2000. This had risen to 23 percent by 2010, with over a million Ghanaians directly dependent on it for their livelihood.

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining are livelihood activities with significant poverty reduction potential in developing countries like Ghana. Admittedly though, this potential is undermined by many factors; the most relevant being the human-health and environmental consequences of the uncontrolled use of mercury for gold extraction in these forms of mining. What is more, mercury-intensive artisanal and small-scale gold mining operations also impact negatively by extension, on other economic sectors.

But these are the very reasons why we must as a country; see the need to regularize the activities of ASM. For me, the legalization and formalization of small-scale gold miners would be a good first step to address the many health, social, and environmental problems the sector faces.

What I think we lack in this country is 'POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE (PMA).' Elsewhere, challenges are seen as opportunities and are turned around to inure to the benefits of the citizenry. But over here in Ghana, we always see only problems and therefore are very quick to choose the easiest options of suppression, brutalization, seizure of, and burning of equipment, detentions etc. to solve them.

Government and its developmental agencies (so-called) are already prejudiced about the 'galamsey' business, and therefore see ASM mainly as a problem rather than opportunity. This kind of stereotyping prevents officialdom from recognizing the positive sides of the 'galamsey business, and are therefore unable to think through any creative processes that would mainstream this productive business into the mining sector. What the state is unfortunately failing to realize is that, incorporating ASM into the mining sector could even become a huge employment area for country and invariably government. In fact, if the proper reformation to ASM is done, it could become a major source of sustainable livelihoods for millions of the underprivileged.

Politicians must therefore begin to think outside the box; and even on their feet, to fashion out real-creative methods of regulating the activities of ASM and even by extension, the Okada business - which is a subject for my next article. The government must change its mindset about ASM, and recognize it as both highly productive and as a legitimate part of the mining sector.

Our leaders and their development partners have historically given little or no attention to the sector and, instead they focus on large-scale mining (LSM).

We have a fixation on LSM which doesn't benefit Ghana any substantially. It employs fewer people and after paying dividends of some 5% or so to the Government, everything else is transferred to the home countries of these expatriates. But ASM when properly regularized, will reduce rural-urban migration to a large extent - thus preventing the growth of huge shantytowns around the large cities, and will increase consumption as well. This is because virtually all the money earned by local small-scale gold miners will be spent in this country.

For these reasons, instead of suppressing their activities using brute force like we usually do, which often makes the situation rather worse, government must hold multi-stakeholder meetings with all the interested parties in the sector, to share knowledge on the activities of ASM, build trust and find innovative solutions to all the health, social and environmental problems often associated with 'galamsey' operations.

If we take land degradation for example; Fact is, 'Nothing is created or gotten out of nothing; and in the process of creating or getting something, one other thing must suffer destruction.' Throughout the history of humankind; we have destroyed in order to build or benefit. Eg: We build factories to produce our consumables; but the emissions from these same factories deplete the ozone layer, we have destroyed certain species of plants in order to plant some others we consider as food, we have degraded the environment in order to put up infrastructure, trees are felled so we would get wood for furniture and construction. In fact, I could go on and on. After all, Genesis 1:26 states that; God has given man dominion over the earth and all in it. For how long are we going to behave like the Biblical man who due to lack of self-belief and lazy thinking, hid his talent in the earth, rather than multiply it Luke 19:24? It continues up to verse 29 and says: those who have will be given more, and those who don't have; even what they have will be taken and given to those who have. Are we then surprised our Gold, Diamond, Timber, Telecom and now Oil are all in the hands of the rich nations who have multiplied the talents God gave to them?

There must be cost-benefit analysis of every venture we undertake as a country, and that will give a clear indication of all the advantages and disadvantages there are to it. After all, there is always the possibility of reclamation, and therefore we must not be afraid to degrade to derive. There would always be degradation in the course of human activity. But the Action Plan, to reclaim / re-fix, must always be a prerequisite.

Government must therefore factor into the policy plan to regularize the activities of the 'galamsey' business; a levy to be imposed on them for reclamation of the lands they explore. These monies would be deposited in special accounts to be set up by the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) under whose jurisdiction these miners operate. The funds would then be used to buy variety of species of seedlings to reclaim those lands which would have been degraded as a result of mining activities. This would even create employments for other people. Can't somebody realize this!

The next is the destruction of river bodies; For example, gold is dense and is easily separated. What this means is; as sand and gravel suspend in flowing water, gold will sink to the bottom and can even be removed by hand. Therefore from the easiest means of mining called panning, to the typical modern practice using grizzly; gold is separated from gravels and sand through the use of water.

The MMDAs could therefore build mechanized bole-holes and large basins into which water from these bole-holes would flow for use by the gold miners, rather than use water from river bodies for that process. The artisans would then be charged on the basis of pay-as-you-use. These would also serve as a source of revenue even for the Assemblies.

There are also companies that provide the most advanced green-based gold mining equipment that have been developed for the new age of eco-friendly gold mining. These technologies, some of which have solar water panel compartment, have the ability to even pump water. Therefore rather than wash the sand and gravels directly in the rivers by blocking them, a dam could be created by using these machines to pump water from the river bodies for the purposes of separation through washing. The dirty water after washing is then re-directed away from the river, or even recycled for use again. These technologies are designed to help in the elimination of mercury amalgamation gold extraction process used primarily by small-scale gold mining operators. Some of the equipment are also capable of processing gold up to 1.1 tons per hour, and can capture gold as small as 5 microns. The interesting thing is that, most of this equipment are mobile and can process gold right at the extraction point.

This is another area government through LESDEP or MASLOC, could partner with the miners to acquire, and given time to pay back.

The MMDAs can then proceed to promulgate by-laws that make it unlawful to mine in and around river bodies.

The final challenge that must be tackled with a sense of urgency - going forward, is the process of acquiring license. The licensing process is lengthy, bureaucratic, and unnecessarily complex. As a result, only wealthy and powerful people are able to obtain mining titles, while poor people in the hinterlands that need them the most because of poverty, are unable to obtain licenses to operate. Meanwhile, ASM offers jobs for millions of poor Ghanaians, who may not have any alternative income-generating options.

Ghanaians ardently seek opportunity and explore every avenue to it, and the least the government would do, is to supplement and not to suppress our ingenuity. It is the responsibility of politicians to be clever, original and inventive in the process of applying ideas to solve problems or meet challenges. It is also worthwhile to harness every brain in this country, from the trivial to the sublime, and even to Divination; in our quest to solving challenges that affect the totality of Ghanaians.

Our problem as a nation is; we don't want to think, and what is more; the deeper we get into trouble, the less we want to think.' So we will bless and follow anyone who gives us the justification for not thinking.

What I mean is, 'the book and dictatorship economics are too much.' It is time to be independent, practical, creative and most importantly ambitious in our thinking - going forward. We must stop being mediocre, and take seriously the creative process of thought, and apply it fully in our everyday thinking.

It is my fervent hope and prayer that as we keep talking about widening the tax net, officialdom will reconsiders its antipathy posture towards artisanal mining; and carefully coordinate and regulate their operations in order to maximize tax inflows.

Ghanaians must be supported to 'compete with competence, flourish in freedom and progress in peace.' We have what it takes to be amongst the Committee of Advanced Nations; we only have to be 'purposefully focused, and courageously ambitious' in our desire to doing some catching-up.

I must at this point however humbly submit that; I am doing all these analysis and providing suggestions as a lay person, and the purpose is only to help policymakers ensure small-scale mining helps improve living conditions, while taking care of the local environments.

Fitbit appSamsung's latest now syncs with your Fitbit

We might have to wait a while for native Bluetooth 4.0 support to make it into the Android code base, but while OEMs are shipping phones with their own implementation of the wireless standard, app developers seem more than willing to hop onboard.

As such, the Fitbit app for Android has today been updated to take advantage of Bluetooth 4.0 syncing on the Samsung Galaxy S4, with all the improvements in efficiency that it brings. As Bluetooth 4.0 support isn't yet standardized in Android, Fitbit says custom development work is required for each new handset. Naturally, Samsung's big-selling flagship was an early priority.

Here's hoping support will follow for other BT 4.0 handsets like the HTC One. In the meantime, you can grab the latest version of Fitbit for Android over at the Google Play link above.

The role of IT in setting strategic priorities and achieving business success is growing for companies throughout the world, according to new research published by CompTIA, the non-profit association for the IT industry.

The International Technology Adoption & Workforce Issues study found that more than 75% of businesses say technology is important or very important to their success, with the majority planning solid increases in IT spending this year. Four in 10 expect to hire new IT staff in 2013.

The research is based on a survey of more than 1,250 business and IT executives in countries around the world - some with mature economies and others, maturing.

Top technology priorities for the next 12 months include cybersecurity, data storage and back-up, network infrastructure, web presence (including e-commerce) and updating aging computers and software.

Tim Herbert , VP, research, CompTIA, commented: "Emerging technologies such as cloud computing continue to see adoption gains as well.

"More than half of responding companies say they are either experimenting with or fully using cloud computing solutions."

Greater reliance on technology may prompt many businesses to increase their IT staff over the next year. Skills rated as having the greatest importance include networks and infrastructure; database and information management; storage; IT support; and server and data centre management.

Many of these positions will also require technical skills in emerging areas such as cloud computing and mobility.

IT skills gaps remain a challenge, with more than half of companies expressing concern about the quality and quantity of IT talent available for hire.

Terry Erdle , executive VP, skills certification, CompTIA, explained: "In many cases skills gaps are a natural part of the IT industry due to the speed of innovation.

"The demand for new technologies can get ahead of the supply of workers who are well trained and credentialed in those areas."

Workers and companies in most countries are responding to the need for more skills. The incidence of IT staff engaging in training over past year ranges from 72% in Japan to 97% in India and Thailand. The majority of businesses also expect IT certifications to increase in importance over the next two years.

PaidContent Founder Rafat Ali Raises Another $1.1M For Skift, His Site For Travel News And Data

skfit logoSkift, the travel industry-focused site that was launched in July 2012 by PaidContent founder Rafat Ali and Jason Clampet (who previously?ran content and editorial partnerships at Frommers.com), is announcing today that it has raised $1.1 million in additional seed funding. The new funding was led by Lerer Ventures, with participation from various funds and angel investors (skip to the end of this post for the full list). It brings the total amount that Skift has raised to $1.5 million.
