Google Maps for iOS updates with faster navigation, more languages

Google Maps for iOS has been updated, with faster navigation and support for more languages. In addition to faster navigation, a route and traffic overview around your destination is available right from the initial search, without the need to enter any additional information.

A new Tips & Tricks menu is available from the sidebar. It takes you to a webpage with different instructions for Google Maps, including finding a business, dropping a pin, and saving addresses. Arabic and Hebrew are also supported with this update, including voice guidance where it is available. There are also a number of bug fixes. The update is now available on the App Store.

U.S. justices to hear challenge to Obama on climate change

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In a blow to the Obama administration, the Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear a challenge to part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's first wave of regulations aimed at tackling climate change.

By agreeing to hear a single question of the many presented by nine different petitioners, the court set up its biggest environmental dispute since 2007.

That question is whether the EPA correctly determined that its decision to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles necessarily required it also to regulate emissions from stationary sources.

The EPA regulations are among President Barack Obama's most significant measures to address climate change. The U.S. Senate in 2010 scuttled his effort to pass a federal law that would, among other things, have set a cap on greenhouse gas emissions.

A federal appeals court in Washington upheld the rules, which were issued by the EPA under the Clean Air Act, in a 2012 ruling. The regulations allowed for greenhouse gas emissions from a wide range of sources to be regulated for the first time.

The court accepted six of the nine petitions.

By agreeing to hear various legal claims raised by states and business groups, the court could be setting the stage for limiting the reach of its 2007 ruling, Massachusetts v. EPA, in which it held on a 5-4 vote that carbon was a pollutant that could potentially be regulated under the Clean Air Act.

The legal question, which the court crafted itself from those raised in the six petitions, indicates the court does not plan to revisit the underlying reasoning behind Massachusetts v. EPA but will weigh whether EPA went further than allowed under the Clean Air Act.

Although the court will not rule until next year, the agreement to entertain the petitions is a setback for the administration. Oral arguments are likely to be heard in early 2014 with a ruling issued by the end of June.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other industry groups, along with some states, had asked the justices to review the regulations.

The court rejected the petitions filed by Virginia, a conservative legal group called the Pacific Legal Foundation, and an industry group, the Coalition for Responsible regulation.

One of those "you don't know their names, but you've grown up with them" subjects that documentarians love, the career of Massimo and Lella Vignelli has given the world everything from the logo on the grill of Ford pickups to the design of the New York City subway system and Heller's perfectly stackable plastic dinnerware, a household staple from the Seventies onward. Roberto Guerra and Kathy Brew target the design geeks who do know the Vignelli name in Design is One, an admiring portrait that spends plenty of time with the multi-disciplinary designers but isn't ambitious enough to tell a story that would appeal to a broader audience. It won't attract the attention paid to Helvetica, Gary Hustwit's ode to the typeface the Vignellis made famous, but it holds value for fans on video.

Almost entirely avoiding backstory or a chronological account of the couple's career, the film alludes to their with-a-bang start after they relocated from Italy to New York in the Sixties: Within a few months, the vaguely-told story goes, they were working for Knoll, doing corporate identity work for Ford, and making a transit map for the MTA that would be hated by some and revered by others.

Guerra and Brew recruit peers like designer Milton Glaser, design historian Steven Heller, and architect Richard Meier to talk about their impact and working style, but they're more interested in hanging out at the couple's home and listening to them talk. Nothing wrong with that, as both are charming people, but structurally the film offers no echo of the Vignellis' rigor -- the snap-in-place grids that govern their book layouts, the clean lines of their furniture. Only once do we really watch them doing their work -- Massimo sketches a layout for an artist's monograph, carefully cropping images with a tool computer-reared designers have never seen -- but there's certainly a wealth of images of old designs parading before the camera.

Officials say Egypt arrests Mursi supporter linked to Cairo attack

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian security officials said on Tuesday that authorities had arrested a supporter of deposed Islamist President Mohamed Mursi suspected of involvement in a rocket-propelled grenade attack on a state-owned satellite station in Cairo.

Any link between the suspect and Mursi in the October 7 attack in the capital is likely to be used to justify tougher measures against Islamists, who authorities have portrayed as terrorists since the army seized power on July 3.

Two people were wounded in the attack in the Maadi suburb of Cairo, the same day that suspected militants killed six Egyptian soldiers near the Suez Canal.

Security officials said a clothes merchant identified as Moataz Mahmoud had been detained. Authorities found weapons including parts of an RPG resembling the ones used in the Maadi attack and a machinegun in his apartment, they said.

"We have strong suspicions that he was involved in the attack," said one of the security officials, adding that the man is a supporter of Mursi.

Security officials said Mahmoud participated in a weeks-long sit-in in northeast Cairo that was organized by Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood movement.

Police and soldiers moved in to clear the vigil in August, killing hundreds of protesters. Brotherhood supporters said Egyptian forces shot at unarmed civilians, but the authorities said they were defending themselves after coming under attack.

Authorities accused the Brotherhood of storing weapons at the site, an allegation the movement has denied.

Egypt has been thrown into political turmoil since the army toppled Mursi and installed an interim government after mass protests against his rule.

The turmoil has hammered tourism and investment in a country at the heart of the Middle East. Western allies are keeping a close eye on Egypt, which has a peace treaty with Israel and controls the Suez Canal, a vital global trade route.

Authorities make no distinction between the Brotherhood, which is now outlawed in Egypt, and al Qaeda-inspired militants in the Sinai Peninsula who have dramatically stepped up attacks on security forces since Mursi's ouster.

The Brotherhood says it is a peaceful group, and that the government makes allegations against it to justify a crackdown that has killed hundreds. More than 2,000 Brotherhood supporters have also been arrested, including Mursi and other top leaders.

Military and security officials say the Brotherhood's real intention was to establish a single Islamic nation across several countries, and that Egypt's national interests were not its priority - allegations it denies.

Fears are growing that an Islamist insurgency could take hold beyond the Sinai and across Egypt. A Sinai-based group claimed responsibility for a failed suicide bombing that targeted Egypt's interior minister in Cairo in September.

There have been several attacks on policemen in the capital.

In order to counter what it says is a rising threat from terrorism, Egypt has imposed a state of emergency and an overnight curfew.

UK's Argos undercuts Tesco with 99.99 pound tablet

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Argos has entered the intensely competitive tablet computer market with a 99.99 pound ($160) own-brand product that is 16 percent cheaper than one launched by Tesco, the UK's largest retailer, last month.

Argos, owned by Home Retail, said on Tuesday its MyTablet would be targeted at teenagers, taking on a market dominated by Apple, Samsung and Amazon.

Tesco sold 35,000 Hudls in two days following its September 30 launch - the fastest-selling tablet launch ever seen at the retailer. Argos is keen to tap into this growing segment as part of its reinvention from a catalogue-led to digitally-led business.

Home Retail has posted five straight years of profit decline and hopes the change of direction for Argos will result in a 15 percent rise in sales to 4.5 billion pounds by 2018.

Like Tesco's Hudl, which is priced at 119 pounds, Argos' MyTablet has a seven-inch screen, runs Google's Android operating system, comes with pre-loaded apps and is enabled for internet browsing, TV, music, video streaming and social networking.

However, MyTablet only has 8 gigabytes of standard memory compared to 16 on the Hudl. It also has a lower resolution screen, an inferior battery life and is only available in two colours versus the Hudl's four.

Both devices will compete with Amazon's Kindle Fire, which retails for 99 pounds, Google's Nexus 7, which costs 199 pounds and Apple's iPad mini, which sells for 269 pounds.

"Millions of people have bought tablets during the last year but there is still around 75 percent of the UK population without one," said Argos managing director John Walden.

Market research company EMarketer estimates there are 19.7 million tablet users in the UK, up 39 percent year-on-year.

Both Argos and Tesco sell a range of branded tablets.

Sebastian James, CEO of Dixons Retail, Europe's second biggest electricals retailer, said last month that although there is a market in Britain for cheap, basic tablets, consumers were often left disappointed by purchases.

"We get a lot back because people use them and they say 'no, what I wanted was an iPad' and they are not," he told Reuters.

"There's a reason why an iPad is more expensive, it's just better."

After decades of frosty relations between the U.S. and Iran, there are signs of a thaw - including the historic telephone call last month between President Barack Obama and his new Iranian counterpart, Hassan Rouhani.

But ties between Tehran and America - the country it once called "Great Satan" - may now extend beyond the diplomatic table, and onto the sports field.

Iranian media reported that the U.S. has asked Iran to play in a mini-tournament on American soil before the World Cup in Brazil next summer.

Both the U.S. Soccer Federation and the U.S. State Department refused to confirm or deny these reports. But State Dept spokesperson Marie Harf told a briefing Monday: “We've always said we were open to direct negotiations and talks with the Iranians, so where a better place than on the soccer field, right?”

U.S. Soccer spokesman Neil Buethe would only say that the organization had been "actively talking to numerous federations that have qualified for the World Cup about playing in the U.S. in late May and early June."

He added: "All of these discussions are preliminary and we do not have any matches set at this point."

David Noemi, a spokesperson for soccer’s world governing body FIFA, said the organization had not been informed about the plans. But he pointed out that FIFA regulations state the hosting country only has to give two months’ notice before registering any fixture.

According to a report by Iran’s Tasnim News Agency, Iran's soccer head coach Carlos Queiroz said he had been contacted by the U.S. and has welcomed the chance to train before the World Cup in the summer.

Queiroz is a Portuguese coach who is well respected in the sport following spells in charge of Real Madrid, Portugal, and Manchester United as an assistant.

His assistant is Dan Gaspar, a Portuguese-American who has coached at several clubs in the U.S. including the University of Hartford and the now defunct Connecticut Wolves.

The Tasnim News Agency report says Iran would be joined by a team from Europe and a team from South America for the mini-tournament and would travel to the U.S. in late April.

However, because both the U.S. and Iran have qualified for the World Cup 2014, the U.S. Soccer Federation may be waiting to see if they are drawn to play each other in the tournament before arranging any other fixtures.

Although the phone call between Obama and Rouhani was the first between a U.S leader and his Iranian counterpart since 1979, the soccer match would be the third between the two countries.

Their first meeting came during the 1998 World Cup in France when Iran shocked the sport by knocking the U.S. out of the competition with a 2-1 defeat.

It was Iran’s first world cup since the 1979 revolution and there was a charged atmosphere on and off the pitch.

Iranian fans unfurled banners inside the Lyon stadium, rejecting Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. And before kickoff Khamenei had ordered the Iranian players not to walk towards the U.S. team to give pre-match handshakes, as was their obligation in being randomly designated “Team B" in the fixture.

But the teams diffused some of the tense atmosphere by exchanging white flowers, a symbol of peace in Iran.

Some 18 months later the two sides played each other again in Pasadena, Calif., which ended in a 1-1 draw.
